Emma Pulaski Adams, 88, wife of James "Jim" Adams, of Beaufort, SC, died Monday, April 21, 2014 at her residence.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 24, 2014 from 5-7pm at Anderson Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 10:00am in The Baptist Church of Beaufort with interment in the churchyard.
Emma Beatrice Pulaski was born on April 19, 1926, a daughter of Claude Dewey and Ruby Beatrice Stanley Pulaski. She was a life-time member of The Baptist Church of Beaufort, being placed in the Cradle Roll in 1927 and Baptized in 1938. She was a member of the Faithful Sunday School Class.
She was in the kindergarten class of Mrs. James Deer, Sr. on The Point, before she entered elementary school in the two-story classrooms attached to the Old College Building, Carteret Street.
In 1942 she received the DAR Medal in History at Beaufort High School. In 1943 she was Salutatorian of the Graduation Class.
She attended Winthrop College in Rock Hill where she was chosen as a Marshal based on scholarship and attractiveness. Her proudest duty was when she lead the dignitaries, including Strom Thurmond, into the auditorium. She received a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, majoring in secondary education, after three years.
In 1946 she taught at Chicora High in North Charleston. On June 29, 1947 in The Baptist Church of Beaufort, she married James Charles Adams. He was her beloved husband for the remainder of her life.
After six years of Civil Service and the opening Em's Shop, she continued her education with graduate courses on the elementary level at USC-B. She taught sixth grade at Beaufort Elementary and Beaufort Academy.
In the 1970's taught on the secondary level at BHS, TCL, and USC-B.
She had been a den mother for the Cub Scouts and former member of the Jaycettes, Camellia and Ribault Garden Clubs, Alpha Delta Kappa and Business & Professional Women's Club for which she was a sponsor of The Nike Club-BHS.
After retirement she joined the American Contract Bridge League and enjoyed traveling the forty-eight contiguous states of the USA and eight of the ten provinces of Canada with her husband.
She self-published A Bicentennial Genealogy after researching four paternal ancestors. She was a member of the National Societies of the daughters of American Colonists, daughters of the American Revolution, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Claudia Sheppard and Janice (Charlie) Dempsey; a son James W. (Cindy) Adams; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
