Lem Howell, 30, is listed in the 1860 federal census at Albemarle P.O., Stanly County, North Carolina, with Mary Howell, 19; Richard Howell, 43; and Martha Howell, 78.
Lemuel M Howell, age 30, farmer, enlisted in Company H, 14th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry, on May 5, 1861, at Albemarle. He was mustered in at Garysburg, North Carolina, on June 6, 1861, by Capt. W. J. Clarke. He died August 17, 1861, at Camp Ellis, Suffolk, Virginia. His widow, Mary Howell, filed a claim for her deceased husband on May 27, 1862.
