CONVERSE — Raymond E. Martin “Papaw Sir,” 70, passed away Friday, Sept. 19, 2014 in his home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Martin was born in Elwood on Dec. 11, 1943 to the late Lester and Ruth (Baker) Martin.

Ray was a 1962 graduate pf Somerset High School. Ray served proudly in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era in the Tet Offensive. He married his wife of 40 years Janice Hovermale on July 28, 1974. He enjoyed working at Chrysler’s Kokomo Transmission plant for 40 years, retiring as a millwright in January 2004. Ray loved spending time with his family and friends making memories at the beach, ski slopes, or around town. He was always entertained by a good story especially if he was the one telling it. Ray discovered a talent for painting and created many cherished pieces over the years. Each fall, he enjoyed attending the Vietnam Veterans Reunion and was a member of the Howard County Veterans Reunion and was a member of the Howard County Vietnam Veterans Organization. He was an official member of “The Breakfast Club” and regularly attended “The Board Meeting.”He attended Converse Church of Christ. Ray truly knew how to live, live, and laugh; he left every person he met better for knowing him.

He is survived by his wife, Janice, daughters, Karen Denise Martin, Stephanie Martin and Jessica Martin, all of Converse, three brothers: Paul(Pat) Martin, Alexandria, Max (Claralou) Martin, Wabash, Jim (Marcia) Martin Elwood, two sisters, Kay Marling, Anderson, Fran (Mike) Williams, Elwood, four grandsons, Christopher (Natalie) Kenyon, Jordan Kenyon, Ian Martin, Tanner Oaks, two great-grandchildren, Isabella and Maddux Kenyon.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Howard Martin.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Converse Church of Christ, 109 E. Wabash St., Converse.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014, at 10 a.m. with Bob Taylor officiating.

Burial will be in Converse Cemetery, with Military Honors.
