Cecilia Elizabeth Moriarty Multhauf, 92, of Brookfield, WI formerly of Brookings, SD, passed away, Thursday, November 13, 2014 at Elm Brook Memorial Hospital, Brookfield, WI.
Cecilia Elizabeth (Moriarty) Multhauf, formerly of Brookings, SD and Lenexa, KS died November 13, 2014 in Brookfield, WI after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke at the age of 92 years.
She was born to John Jeremiah and Cecilia Annamarie (Eibner) Moriarty , the second of their five children and only girl, on May 27, 1922 in New Ulm, MN.
Atown she loved as the home of her maternal grandparents and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Growing up in Brookings during the depression and later, WWII, she learned early on what was important in life: namely faith, family, and freedom.
She attended Brookings public schools in the 1920’s and 1930’s where she developed a love of learning that included nature, music, and art, all subjects that would delight her during her entire life.
After she earned a B.A. in Home Economics with additional courses in teaching and music, and working in the family café, she became a high school teacher in Bryant, SD for several years, where she earned the respect of staff and students alike.
Nonetheless, she finally heeded the recommendations of her brothers James and Joseph to go to Milwaukee, WI, where they were in graduate school, and enroll in courses in Philosophy and Theology at Marquette University. It was in Wisconsin that she would soon meet her future spouse, Cyril Joseph Multhauf, on a blind date over a fish fry at Kalt’s.
They were married May 31, 1956 at St. Thomas More Church in Brookings during the peak of lilac season. Ever a handsome couple the newlyweds honeymooned in Europe and then made their home in Kansas City, MO on the Country Club Plaza where Cy practiced General Surgery until his death in October 1977.
Moving to nearby Mission, KS, Cecilia and Cyril welcomed three children into their family and dedicated their lives to the physical and spiritual well-being of Cecilia Marie in 1959, Joseph in 1960, and finally Mary Angela in 1962. A loving wife for twenty-one years and mother always.
Cecilia’s life inspired her children to share her love of God’s creation, the Catholic faith and the rosary, her Irish heritage, and the many beautiful people in this world.
In 1989 she welcomed her first grandson, Cyril August, into her life, followed in 1992 by a son-in-law, David, and eventually five additional Lang grandchildren
With them she shared an ever playful spirit that always left them feeling happy, loved, and encouraged.
On annual trips to Beaver Creek, CO and Rapid City, SD the family enjoyed Grandma’s colorful stories from her past, her contagious smile, her quick wit, and the predictable trips to get a dish of ice cream or chocolate cake.
Her gratitude for simple kindnesses was exemplary and her generosity never ending.
Always at home among strangers, she gathered friends wherever she went.
Always game for a drive in the country, a parade with marching bands, or a visit to the nursery in the springtime with her son Joseph, she ultimately desired little but the love of her family who reciprocated freely.
With God as her Father she obeyed his commands adoringly, never worrying about tomorrow, but naturally existing wholly in the moment, a foreshadowing of the eternal life she now undoubtedly enjoys with Him and His angels and saints.
Cecilia is survived by her children, her grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, godchildren and special friends in KS, SD, WI, and AZ.
Cecilia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Cyril Joseph, and a sister-in-law, Bernice Moriarty, as well as nephews Gregory and Charles Moriarty.
The family is forever grateful for the excellent care given to Cecilia by her son Joseph for many years and daughter Mary Angela over the several years preceding her death.
A special thank you also to Shelley Carda for years of treasured correspondence. And to all who attended and made the years of apple picking in John’s orchard a reality, no words of gratitude suffice.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at Rude’s Funeral Home with a 6:30pm Rosary and Liturgical Wake Service. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
