Over the past 4 weeks, we have been able to see the outpouring of love and devotion towards Jan. Friends from near and far came to her aid with thoughts, prayers, companionship, nourishment and most of all love.

It has been amazing to see the people from various walks of life, reenter her life, sharing stories of love, life, accomplishments and encouragement.

Jeannette (Jan) Helen McConnell Balzer passed away November 22, 2014 at Reid Memorial Hospital with loved ones at her side.

She was born in Detroit, Michigan and was the only child of William W. & Marjorie C. Harkness McConnell.

In 1958, she graduated from Richmond High School and returned to Detroit to pursue her nursing degree at Grace Hospital, graduating in 1962.

She earned her BSN from Ball State University in 1989.

She and Mr. Hopkins returned to Richmond to establish their home, family and careers.

Jan was able to secure a job at North American Tool Company as the first Registered Nurse. She then went on to employment at Reid Memorial Hospital as the Head Nurse of Obstetrics. Through this position she was able to ensure quality care for mothers and babies through implementation of numerous equipment, programs and designs. With her dedication, knowledge and education, she was able to excel to the position of Director of Nursing at Reid Hospital.

After retiring from Reid, Jan continued to remain busy within the community as a small business owner and Independent Administrative nurse.

She leaves the following children to cherish her memory: Douglas (Robin) Hopkins, Patricia (Donald) Trace, Thomas Hopkins and Kathleen (Dwaine) Olinger. The following grandchildren: Zachary (Danielle) Trace, Lauren (Victor) Moretz, Kelsea Hopkins (Bryan). Chase Olinger and Gabrielle Olinger The following great grandchildren: Lily Trace, Logan Moretz, Xander, Amelia and Annabelle Camden. Siblings: Joanna (Rod) Smith and Scott (Diana) Hasse Special Companion: William Balzer Special Friends: Pam Anderson, Mary Duvall and Michelle Ravencraft and her beloved pet Abby.

A remembrance will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on December 6, 2014. 121 South 18th Street Richmond, Indiana. Friends and family will be received between 1:00-3:00 pm. Prayer will be held at 1:00.Arrangements: Indiana Funeral Care and Crematory
