Malry Johnnie Johnson Sr., was born in Hatch, New Mexico, Sept. 22, 1920, to Clinton Roy Johnson and Willie Lee (Gordon) Johnson. Malry grew up around Caballo, New Mexico, and as a small boy lived on his family's ranch.Malry was drafted into the Army, and on his draft documents he listed his civilian occupation as "cowpuncher." He served in World War II, and among his military accomplishments were ARC Welder, Marksman Rifle, American Theater Service Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal.Malry had four children from his marriage to Cordelia McGinn Johnson, Malene (Fred) Swenson, Malry (Millie) Johnson Jr., Sharron (Bob) Harvey, and Jeanie (Wayne) Jones. Malry married Geraldine Lechner on Sept. 24, 1998, and gained three additional children, Gordon (Marian) Lechner, Charles (Nancy) Lechner, and Susan (Kenny) Pfeiffer.Malry loved to learn new skills. He liked to tinker on, and repair, machinery and equipment, and was very innovative in creating new products to help in his work. He loved music, and learned to play the violin and mandolin. In fact, he learned the mandolin at age 80. He was also very good at carpentry and building. However, his primary occupation was foreman at various sawmills in Arizona and New Mexico.Malry is survived by his wife Geraldine; his daughter Malene; son Malry Jr.; daughter Jeanie; stepsons Gordon and Charles; stepdaughter Susan; 25 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father Roy; his mother Willie; four brothers; one sister; daughter Sharron and grandson Dale.A viewing will be held at La Paz – Graham's Mortuary at 6 p.m. today, July 1, 2015. Malry's memorial service will be Thursday, July 2, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Abundant Life Church, 1980 Spruce, Las Cruces, New Mexico. The Rev. James Pinckard will officiate the service. There will be a graveside service at Caballo Cemetery in Caballo at 4 p.m.
