Gary Parker, who founded an oil company in St. Louis and built it into a multibillion-dollar operation, died Saturday after a ski accident at a Colorado resort.
He was the founder, CEO and majority owner of Center Oil Co. in Town and Country. It is one of the largest privately held companies in St. Louis, with sales “in excess of $4.8 billion,” according to a company website.
Parker, 64, was notoriously private about himself and his business. The company announced his death in a four-sentence statement Monday but released no details about the accident or his injuries.
Kara Bettis, the coroner for Eagle County, Colo., said Parker suffered trauma injuries and later died at a Denver hospital.
In a statement, Vail Resorts, a resort company, said only that the Beaver Creek Ski Patrol had received a report of an unresponsive man about 11 a.m. Friday on a lower section of Beaver Creek. Paramedics began life support and transported him to a hospital, which sent the injured man by ambulance to Swedish Medical Center in Denver.
Forbes magazine recently published a brief profile of Parker with a silhouette in black instead of a photo.
Parker previously worked at two companies. He worked five years at Koch Oil Co. of Wichita, Kan. In 1976, he joined Apex Oil of Clayton, where he was executive vice president for 10 years .
In 1986, he founded G.P.&W Inc., which does business as Center Oil Co., an oil distribution company with headquarters in Town and Country.
Jerry Jost, an official at Center Oil, said he could not answer any questions about Parker.
“Gary’s passion and vibrance will be greatly missed,” the company said in a statement.
According to his biography, Parker earned an undergraduate degree in business administration from Wichita State University.
Among the survivors are his wife, Karman, and the couple’s six children, all of Town and Country.
Ralph Casazzone was named president of Center Oil, the company said.
Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Road, Kirkwood. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Clement Catholic Church, 1510 Bopp Road, Des Peres. Burial will be private.
