Records suggest her date of birth was between 1835 and 1838 to parents Loren Shaw and Malinda Wheeler in Prescott, MA. Her parents were married in Greenwich, MA in 1832 and most records suggest that the Shaw family subsequently lived in Hardwick, MA, where her father Loren worked as a shoemaker. Her mother Malinda died in Hardwick around 1842.

Her first marriage was in Wendell, MA on 14 July 1850 to Alonzo Washburn of Orange, MA. They appear to have been married only briefly, but the cause of the marriage's end are unknown. Wedding records for her second marriage suggest that she was a widow, but Alonzo Washburn did not die until 1887 in Athol, MA, suggesting some sort of unhappy dissolution of the marriage.

Her second marriage was in Shutesbury, MA in 1851 to Horatio N. Cole of Leverett, MA. They lived in the household of Horatio's parents Nathaniel Cole and Elizabeth (Gardner) Cole in Leverett, where she appears to have been using her middle name Caroline in census records. Sarah Caroline and Horatio had one child, Erastus Hillman Cole, born in 1853. Horatio Cole died of tuberculosis in 1857.

After her husband Horatio Cole's death census records suggest that she lived in the Leverett area, but not in the Cole household. Her son Erastus continued to live with his grandparents.

Her third marriage was to Almond Algernon Brewer Jr.in Roylaston, MA on 28 March 1871. She died of unknown causes in Royalston in 1872.

Her burial location is not known.
