John “Johnny” Schraub went home to be with our Lord, October 24, 2016. He was born on January 8, 1938 to Cleburne Albert Schraub and Caroline Rose Schraub in Port Arthur, Texas. Johnny was one of two children born alive to his parents. His mother had 13 miscarriages and his one surviving brother passed away from SIDS. His parents adopted a daughter, Carrie Schraub, as part of their family. Johnny instantly and graciously became a big brother with responsibilities. Taking on responsibility with his greatest efforts was the theme of his life. His father worked as an engineer training others to operate new facilities for Dupont which meant the family had to move often. Johnny went to 6 high schools. When he moved to Circleville High School in Ohio he met the love of his life, Sandy McAlister. Once again Johnny moved. Johnny attended Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, Texas. He eagerly played football wearing a leather helmet. He was required to also run track which he did not find much joy doing, but as always he put forth his best efforts. He was finally reunited with Sandy during her senior year of college. Johnny enlisted in the Navy and entered the Officer Candidate School and became a pilot. As a pilot his task was to track down submarines. Johnny had many adventures in the Navy which we all loved to listen to. Johnny and Sandy planned and organized a wedding which was postponed a week because Johnny was on a mission. Due to the lack of readily available communication Johnny proudly made it to the wedding on time to only find out his parents and Sandy had postponed the wedding. While serving as a Lt. in the Navy Johnny and Sandy became parents to Christina and John. After serving 6 years in the military Johnny became a Gas Lift Engineer for McMurray Oil Tools. Johnny and Sandy then became parents again to Michael “Mike” Schraub. Johnny moved his family to Huntsville, Texas when McMurray Oil tools was relocated. Johnny volunteered and coached many Little League Football and Baseball teams in Pasadena, Texas as well as in Huntsville, TX. Later in life Johnny became Sandy’s primary caretaker when she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. After many years of working and caring for Sandy he retired from Weatherford Oil Tools. When Sandy passed away in 2007 he never stopped loving or missing her. Johnny was passionate about watching football. He kept up with the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs, and the Houston Texans. He was cheering on the Texas A&M Aggies 2 days before he went to be with his Lord. Johnny and Sandy were members of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Pasadena, TX, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, and First United Methodist Church of Huntsville, TX. Johnny is described by loved ones and friends as a loving, hardworking, responsible, and respectful man with a gentle spirit, big smile, and dancing eyes. Johnny said his children were his glory in life!

Johnny is preceded in death by his brother, Cleburne Jr.; parents, Cleburne and Caroline Schraub; sister, Carrie Schraub Barnes; and Loving wife, Sandy Schraub.

Johnny is survived by his daughter Christina Matthys & husband Bryan, his son John Schraub & wife Kathy and his son Mike Schraub & wife Gail, 10 grandchildren, Clayton Matthys & wife Allison, Jonathan Matthys with Hayley Wechsler , Christopher Matthys & wife Arlene, Brittany Matthys, ChristaBryn Matthys with Hunter Pirtle, Brandon Schraub , Gage Schraub, Amanda Schraub, Taylor Schraub and Evan Schraub, two Great Grandchildren Jayden Matthys and Landon Matthys.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM till 7:00 PM on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 27, 2016 in the chapel at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas. Interment will follow the service at Brooke Cemetery in Huntsville, Texas.
