Son of Owen and Mamie Holley. Born in Mississippi, Murray and his family moved to Florence, Alabama when he was 14. After graduation from Coffee High School, he received an appointment to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, Connecticut. Because of medical complications, he was unable to complete his training at the Academy and returned to Florence to attend Florence State College (later UNA) where he met his future wife, Patricia. Military service called him into the U.S. Army in February 1966. After training as a combat engineer at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he completed a tour in Vietnam from November 1966 until October 1967. Upon returning to the States, he pursued a career in industrial sales that led his family to New Orleans, Louisiana, St. Louis, Missouri, and Atlanta, Georgia. Murray finally returned to Florence where he resided most of his life. He enjoyed social gatherings and often entertained friends with parties at his home. He loved fishing, working crossword puzzles (member of MENSA since age 18), and tinkering with his tools. In latter years, he was actively involved in compensation efforts with Vietnam War veterans regarding their exposure to Agent Orange.
