Obituary from the Fairbanks, Alaska "Daily News-Miner" newspaper dated Thursday, August 2, 2012, page B-2:

Vivian May Cogan, 84, or as most knew her "Ma Cogan" dedicated wife and mom, passed away July 27, 2012, with her family by her side.

Vivian was born in Little Park, Colorado, on March 23, 1928. In November 1963, she drove from Salida, Colorado to Fairbanks, Alaska with her husband, Jerry, and eight children. Happy and strong at heart, she raised 11 children and was "mom" to many others, sharing her knowledge of cooking, crafts, and making sure every child had their tummies full. She was a true pioneer of Alaska, providing her family with a beautiful vegetable garden, picking berries, tending to farm animals and making the best bread, cinnamon rolls and jams.

Her love of music and singing filled our home, her church and occasionally the public when she sang with the University of Alaska Fairbanks choir. Vivian's prsence, singing, infectious giggles, hugs and caring heart will be greatly missed.

She is buried on the family plot at their homestead in a casket lovingly prepared by her husband and children.

Vivian was proceded in death by sisters, Mildred Yates, Doris Tompkins, Betty Yates, Joelle Stroud, and Katherine Yates; her mother, Ruby Pauline Workman, and father, Fred Little Yates.

She is survived by her husband Jeremiah Stephen Cogan; brothers: Orie Francis, Wallace Gross, Frank Gross, Richard Gross, Roderick Yates and Robin Yates; children: Jack and Nory Cogan of the Philippines, Jeremiah J. and Carolyn Cogan of Arizona, Michael and Jenny Cogan of Arkansas, Patrick Cogan and Julie of Fairbanks, Andrew and Elizabeth Cogan of Fairbanks, Vivian and Marshall Wiley of Colorado, Chirstopher Cogan of Fairbanks, Ruby and Martin Pawson of California, Ruth and Paul Sonnenberg of Wasilla, David Cogan of California, Daniel and Dawn Cogan of Fairbanks, 35 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, August 4, 2012, at he Immaculate Conception Church, 115 North Cushman Street, Fairbanks, Alaska.
