Musician, Drummer. Regarded as a pioneer of avant-garde jazz, free funk, and jazz fusion. He performed over the years with Charles Mingus, Betty Carter, Jackie McLean and Joe Henderson. His name was most closely linked with free-jazz pioneers including the saxophonist Albert Ayler, the pianist Cecil Taylor and, foremost, the saxophonist Ornette Coleman. During his career he appeared on over 50 albums as a bandleader, sideman, arranger, and producer. He died at the age of 73 due to cardiovascular complications.
