Victor Speas took over the family business at the age of 21, when his father John W. Speas died. The Speas Company manufactured vinegar, apple juice, apple brandy and apple pectin. Speas was responsible for expanding the local company to 21 plants throughout the United States. More than half of the company’s sales were to commercial manufacturers of pickles, mustard and condiments. Lived with his mother until her death. Dated his wife for 30 years, marrying her when he was 64 years old. The Speas foundations, established in the 1940s, focus on medical research and help finance research into cancer and heart disease. Beneficiaries of the Speas millions have included Truman Medical Center, Midwest Research Institute, Kansas City Hospice and William Jewell College.
