Brothers Samuel and Alfred Woolf opened a store in Leavenworth, Kansas where they made and sold shirts. Although the store did well there, in June of 1879 they moved the business to Kansas City, Missouri. When Samuel Woolf died in 1895, brother Alfred ran the business until in his late 60's, and then his son, Herbert M. Woolf, succeeded him in 1913. Herbert Woolf was the owner of the 1938 Kentucky Derby winner Lawrin. Herbert's nephew, Alfred Lighton, took over as President of the stores in 1962. Woolf Brother's Clothing stores closed permanently in 1992, after operating in Kansas City, Missouri 113 years.
