Poor old Tom is no more, having passed away Saturday night. Tom was simply a faithful old cat which had done duty among the business men of Springdale for the past 13 years. In 1885 Tom was rescued from a watery grave by Bert Williams who was then clerking in the store of B.F. Learer. The death sentence had been passed upon the cat by some mischievous boys and a rock was tied to a string and attached to his neck. He was thrown in the creek but fortunately the string broke and he swam to the shore and was taken into the protecting arms of Mr. Williams. Tom showed his appreciation of this kindly act by living the life of a true and up-righteous cat. He was a privileged character around town and was perfectly at home in any business house. He had been in the grocery store of F.C. Ritter for the several days previous to his death. On Saturday Mr. Ritter noticed there was something wrong with Tom as he refused to eat and appeared to be in low spirits generally and Sunday morning he was found dead in the rear of the store. Probably the noise and excitement of the celebration Saturday was too much for the nerves and dignity of the staid old feline and helped to hasten his death. Poor old Tom is doubtless now enjoying the fruits of a well spent life. He has gone where mice are plentiful and where boot jacks and ink bottles are unknown. Peace to his ashes.
