Wayne Cloud, as he was known to everyone in Newton County, back in the day, would help anyone with anything and never would take money for helping.

He drove many of a mile taking folks to the doctor in Harrison.

He loved Coke a Cola and enjoyed buying kids a bottle of 'soda' to drink.

He'd told friends that when he died he didn't want to be buried in a coffin, just wrapped in a quilt and put in the ground, according to his Native American Indian beliefs. When he died he was buried as per his wishes.

There is a plaque in his honor along with a picture in the Newton County Courthouse at Jasper, AR.
The rodeo arena at Jasper, AR. at the Newton Co. Fair Grounds is named for and in honor of him, The Cloud Wayne Arena.

This man is remembered by all who knew him as a kind and generous man, always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need.

Below are remembrances of people who lived in and around Jasper, AR.
Back in the day everyone knew Wayne. He was a friend to all.

Travis Holt... So, since I think that oral history is one of the most important things, regarding our heritage, I have to ask; I ran across Cloud Wayne being buried in Jasper Cemetery. Does anyone have any stories pertaining to him? Since I never knew him, I'd love to hear them!
James H Pierce I remember him sitting on one of the benches in front of the Ozark Cafe talking to people when they walked by. Roy Raulston was usually sitting close by laughing about something or other. I liked to listen to their stories.

Erma Daniels- Warren... He was a dear sweet man. I had polio when I was 18 months old. He felt sorry for me I guess. He carved me out 2 little Indian dolls. No one to this day knows what happened to them. I would love to have them.

Erma Daniels- Warren... Never heard a bad word spoke of him. The city of jasper buried him as an honor and made a plaque with his info on it. He was well thought of.

Dona Wise Madewell... When I was little, we lived at low gap. When someone was sick, he would go sit with them and help take care of them. This was long before health insurance, or nursing homes. If you were old and disabled, your only choice was family take you in, or you managed the best you could. Wayne helped these people.
I always heard his name was Cloud Wayne, wonder which name is correct?
Mother and Daddy invited him to dinner, many times, I was young and didn't pay much attention.

Beverly Joe Vaughn... I remember seeing him around Jasper when I was a kid. He seemed like such a big man. When he laughed, which was often, his face didn't break into a smile like most folks, his lips barely curved into a smile, his eyes smiled but you'd hear a deep rumble in his chest as he laughed. I remember him buying kids a bottle of 'soda'. He loved to sit with friends in Jasper and play dominoes. I remember the older people in my family talk about him driving different folks to Harrison to the doctor. He was always so kind, especially to older folks. The story goes he said he didn't want to be buried in a coffin but just wrapped in a quilt and buried. This was the traditional way his people was buried. I've been told his wish was granted. The world needs more men like him.

Beverly Joe Vaughn... I remember him being called Wayne Cloud.

Ruby Ramsey Harris... I remember him at church when I was a teenager he was a nice quiet kind of guy. I remember one night he was standing outside the window where I was sitting at church and when I looked at him he smiled real big at me. I was so shy I’m sure my face turned red. I turned away and didn’t look again.

Janice Tennison-Higgins... I had my first job at Pearls cafe when I was about 15 years old. Wayne was always around town, in and out of the cafe. Really nice guy.

Norma Taylor... He used to live by us at Ponca and he bought ice cream bars for us but we was gone so him and our dog sat on the steps of the church and eat all of them, He was always willing to help anyone. I remember when he moved to Ponca from Oklahoma, he came with a Pettigrew family! Cloud Wayne was what I remember him being called!

Rhonda Teter... Full blood indian but I don't know what tribe. He took care of my grandpa until he died. Such a good man! I'm sure one of those stars up there is for him.

Gina Freeman Lackey... I heard that he moved here to work in the mines and a bunch of other Indians came too and then after all the work was done they moved on but he didn't want to move he stayed here.

Joyce Bonds... A family by the name of Pettigrew brought him and his nephew, Lee Sellers, to Ponca with them from Stillwell, Oklahoma. The nephew didn't stay long but Cloud Wayne stayed. He would go to church. He went to Jasper then.

"When you remember me, it means that you have carried something of who I am with you, that I have left some mark of who I am on who you are. It means that you can summon me back to your mind even though countless years and miles may stand between us. It means that if we meet again, you will know me. It means that even after I die, you can still see my face and hear my voice and speak to me in your heart. For as long as you remember me, I am never entirely lost."
