Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was enrolled in the 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 28, 1862, and was mustered in as a Private in Company K on September 13, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg, and in the May 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville. At Chancellorsville he took part in his regiment's roll in the assault on Confederate positions at Salem Church, near Fredericksburg. There he recieved a gunshot to the right arm, and had to have the limb amputated after the battle. Despite his wound, he remained in the regiment's rolls until he was honorably mustered out on June 27, 1863, when the 23rd New Jersey's enlistment expired by law.
