Benjamin Franklin Bates, my 2nd great grand uncle was born about June 6, 1842 in Burlington County, New Jersey to Moses and Ann Bates. He lived in Burlington County his whole life where he was employed as a farm laborer till he was about 68. He then worked as a laborer for the Palmyra Township which is in Burlington County.

He enrolled in Company G, 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 28, 1863, and was mustered in as a Private on September 13, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, and the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was honorably discharged with his regiment on June 27, 1863.

He married Annie E. [maiden name unknown] probably before 1869 [the year their first child was born]. They had two children; Carrie Bates and Harry Bates. Annie, who was born about 1846, died in 1873.

Benjamin married a second time on January 10, 1879, to Hannah Russel Shaw. Hannah was born in February 1840 in the Frankford section of Philadelphia. One census says that Hannah had three children but only two were living. Another census said she had two children. In any case, her known children are Anna L Bates and William Bates. Hannah died on January 7, 1916, in Burlington County. Benjamin lived to the age of 90. He died in Burlington County on September 29, 1932. He was buried in the Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cinnaminson, New Jersey.
