Vermont Governor. The first native-born Governor of Vermont, his father had cleared land for a farm in Shoreham, but died when he was only a year old. His mother continued to run the farm with his assistance, allowing him only a few weeks each year to attend the district school (he was also privately tutored). While running the family farm attained several local offices including Town Selectman. He served as Addison County Assistant Judge from 1829 to 1835, and as Lieutenant Governor and acting Governor from 1835 to 1836. In the 1835 governor's race incumbent William A. Palmer, an Anti-Mason had 46.4 percent, William Bradley, the Democrat had 37.9 percent, and the Whig, Charles Paine, got 16.1 percent. Vermont's Constitution requires that the legislature elect if no candidate receives 50 percent. After 63 inconclusive votes, the legislators decided to let the newly elected Lieutenant Governor act as governor until the next election. Jenison was elected governor in the next four races, twice beating Bradley, and serving from 1836 to 1841. First President, Addison County Agricultural Society, 1844-48. After serving as Governor, Probate Judge of Addison District, 1842-47.
