William Horner Brown, 86, of Homosassa, Florida, died on Saturday, August 21, 2010, at a hospice near his home.

He was born on March 30, 1924, in Fairmont, West Virginia, the son of the late Virtue Horner Brown and Franklin Earl Brown. He was also preceded in death by his wives, Brady Fletcher Brown and Mary Frances Knight Brown; his son, William Brady Brown; his brother, Robert L. Brown; his stepson, Robert McIlvaine; and his beloved dog, Lobo.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Cunard Brown; mother-in-law, Gertrude Cunard; daughters and their husbands, Sara Friedman and Pat Doran, Katherine Denby and Keith, Libba Williams and Andy, Dorrie Estebo, Martha Wick and Jeff, and Ellie Summers and Bok; stepchildren, Richard McIlvaine, Ellen Johnson and her husband, Jim, and Becky McIlvaine; thirteen grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; sister-in-law, B.J. Brown; and his best buddy, Howard Hawkins.

Bill was president of West High School, Class of 1942. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1949 and the University School of Law in 1952. Bill was a United States Navy World War II veteran, the mayor of Scottsville, Virginia, Secretary of the Albemarle County, Virginia, Electoral Board, Assistant Attorney General in charge of St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands, President of the University of Virginia Alumni Association New York Greater Metropolitan Chapter, President of Quaker Hill and Pawling, New York, Historical Society, and member of the Homosassa, Florida, Kiwanis Club.

Bill loved telling and embellishing stories of his life experiences. As a young man, he was an avid hunter and James River fisherman. He had a wonderful bass voice and sang in many choirs and musical performances including Gilbert and Sullivan productions at the University of Virginia. Bill's passion for the Whooping Crane Reintroduction into the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge enhanced his time in Homosassa.
