Born in the tiny town of Groven, Dithmarschen, Holstein, Denmark (now Germany), to Hans Tonssen and Antje Looff Tonssen, Gustav Thonssen arrived in New York 18 Jan 1860 on the ship Hammonia from Hamburg. He lived first in Cincinnati, OH. Later business interests took him to St. Louis, MO. Gustav had his own business in St. Louis during the 1870s-1890s. First called Thonssen and Pfirrman, it was later the G.H. Thonssen Manufacturing Co. The company made billiard tables and picture frames. His business is pictured and described in Camille Dry's ‘Pictorial St. Louis' published in 1876. The company was in the Soulard area of St. Louis on the riverfront. The building that housed it still stands.
