Artist. A friend and protege of Jean Cocteau, he achieved recognition as a painter while still quite young; Pablo Picasso considered him a potential genius. Fascinated with unschooled painters like Henri Rousseau, Wood developed a folk-like style (often using oil-based house paint for deliberately crude effect), though his draftsmanship was often brilliant. A troubled, openly gay opium addict, he committed suicide at 29, throwing himself under a train at Salisbury Station. A retrospective of Wood's work was first held in London in 1938. His portrait of composer Constant Lambert hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. Lambert named his son, Christopher "Kit", after Wood.
