Artist, Motion Picture Director. Born in Lund, Sweden, he moved to Paris in 1897 and lived in Switzerland during World War I, where he joined the Dada movement. In 1918 he settled in Berlin and began his association with German painter Hans Richter; together they created a series of elaborate scroll paintings through which they tried to ascertain the principles of "rhythm in painting". Eggeling decided to carry this concept into film and spent three years (1921-24) animating thousands of abstract drawings based on his scrolls. The result, the seven-minute short "Diagonal Symphony", is a landmark of avant-garde cinema, influencing many filmakers. It had its first public screening in Berlin on May 1, 1925. Less than three weeks later, Eggeling died of septic angina at 44.
