Artist Belle Baranceanu, 86; painted many murals in city:- January 21, 1988

Belle Baranceanu of La Jolla, a nationally acclaimed artist whose murals adorned many private and public buildings in San Diego, is dead at age 86.

Miss Baranceanu died Sunday at the White Sands retirement home in La Jolla. Cremation was planned by Humphrey Mortuary. Private memorial services are planned.

Miss Baranceanu was born in Chicago and lived in the county 55 years. A graduate of the Minneapolis School of Art, she had taught at Frances W. Parker School, United States International University and the San Diego Museum of Art.

Her paintings are in the La Jolla Art Museum, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, the National Academy of Design, the Carnegie Institute and the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. Her paintings also are owned by many private collectors.

She painted murals for La Jolla High School, Roosevelt Junior High School, the San Diego Musuem of Art and the La Jolla Post Office. The murals were painted during the Depression under sponsorship of the Works Progress Administration.

During the 25th-anniversary celebration of the University of California at San Diego in 1965, Miss Baranceanu was honored with an exhibition of her paintings, drawings and prints at the UCSD Mandeville Gallery.

Survivors include a cousin, Roland Ford of Woodland Hills, Calif.
