Russian Archaeologist. He is remembered for serving as the 3rd Director of the Russian Imperial Public Library (now known as the National Library of Russia) at Saint Petersburg. Russia, from 1811 until his death in 1843 and 6th president of the Russian Academy of Arts from 1817 until his death. Born into a noble family, he was initially educated at home until 1774, when he enrolled in the Corps of Pages, a military academy in Saint Petersburg. From 1780 until 1785 he studied history in Dresden, Germany. He then returned to Russia and began his military career which lasted until 1795, during which he saw service in the Russo-Swedish War. He was then employed on a variety of government positions, including director of the Saint Petersburg Mint in 1799. In 1804 he was elected a member of the Academy of Arts and two years later, he published his first scholarly paper, "A letter to Prince Musin-Pushkin on the stone of Tmutarakan found at the island of Taman in 1792", in which he deciphered the inscription on the stone. Because of this paper, he is regarded as a founder of Russian paleography. He died at the age of 79.
