Cpl Fred Planty, holder of the silver star medal for gallantry in action in Tunisia, was killed in action June 10, according to word received by the mother, Mrs. Frank Rusaw, Grantville, near Massena.
Corporal Planty was born in Massena Jan 29, 1912, a son of Mrs. Rose Lalonde Planty Rusaw and the late Edward Planty. He attended local schools and worked at the aluminum plant before entering service Mar 6, 1941.
He was in four major invasions, North Africa, Tunisia, Sicily, and France. He went overseas two years in July.
Corporal Planty and a small group of enlisted men charged through heavy enemy mortar and machine gun fire and completely destroyed an enemy machine gun nest in the vicinity of Djbel Berakine, Tunesia, Apr 26, 1943.
He has one sister, Mrs. Ruth Planty Powell, Norwood; Five brothers, Floyd and David in Canton, Ray, Norfolk, Gerald, Helena and Pvt Carl Planty, stationed at Camp Hobbs, N. Mex.
