Singer. Pop crooner of lightweight fun songs. He was born Albert Cernik in Detroit, Michigan the son of Croatian immigrants. When he was 11 his family moved to Los Angeles. They often sang together for fun and pleasure. He auditioned for Warner Brothers, who had plans to groom him to be a child star. This film career was delayed when the family moved to San Francisco and he became a regular on a radio show with Dude Martin doing country and western music. In 1947 he became a vocalist with Carmen Cavallero's orchestra, and in 1949 joined "Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts". His big break came when Mitch Miller, a Columbia Records producer, signed him to a contract and labeled him with the name "Guy Mitchell". Between 1950 and 1960 he had 40 hit records, most of them novelties, folk tunes and country songs. "My Heart Cries for You" and "The Roving Kind" were at the top. His days seemed to be over in the mid-1950's with the advent of rock 'n roll. He made the switch with top hits "Singing the Blues", "Rock-a-Billy" and "Heartaches by the Number."
