Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Essex, England, he served as a Private in the 2nd Battalion, Prince Cort's Rifle Brigade, British Army. At Lucknow, India, on the March 11, 1858, Corporal Nash's company was engaged with a large number of the enemy near the Iron Bridge. When Private Hawkes and an officer with four other men were at the end of a street, they with opposed by a considerable body of the enemy. One of the four was shot through both legs, and became utterly helpless. Even though Private Hawkes was himself severely wounded, he with other comrade carried the wounded man a considerable distance, exposed to enemy fire while the officer and the others covered their retreat. Private Hawkes was later killed in actions at Fyzabad, India. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on December 24, 1858.
