Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Bishopswearmouth, England, he was one of only five civilians to be vested with the Victoria Cross. On September 27, 1858, Chicken was serving as a volunteer in the Indian Naval Brigade at Suhejnee, near Peroo, Bengal. Attached to a mixed party of troopers of mounted police and cavalry, he charged into the middle of about 100 mutineers. The troopers were surrounded on all sides, but, fighting desperately, Chicken succeeded in killing five before he was cut down himself. Members of the cavalry dashed into the crowd to his rescue, after killing several of the enemy. For great gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on April 27, 1860. George Chicken was given command of H.M. Schooner Emily in March 1860 and lost at sea with all hands in a violent squall off Sandheads, in the Bay of Bengal, in May 1860.
