World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Cawpore, India, he served as a Sepoy in the 9th Bhopal Infantry, British Indian Army. At the Battle of the Wadi, on the Tigris Front, Mesopotamia, on January 13, 1916, Sepoy Chatta Singh went to assist his Commanding Officer who was lying wounded and helpless in the open. He bound up the officer's wound and then dragged him to cover. With his entrenching tool and being exposed to very heavy rifle fire, he dug a cover fox hole. For five hours until nightfall he remained beside the wounded officer, shielding him with his own body on the exposed side. Then he under the cover of darkness went back for assistance and brought the officer into safety. For most conspicuous bravery, he was promoted Havildar and awarded the Victoria Cross on June 21, 1916. He died in Tilsada, India, at age 75.
