Third China War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Limerick, Ireland, he served as a Lieutenant in the 94th Regimnet of Foot, British Army. On August 21, 1860, Lieutenant Burslem's unit was in an assault at the ditches of the North Taku Fort, China. He with another man in his unit swam the ditches, during the assault and before an entrance had been effected by anyone, opened in the fort wall, through which they eventually entered and they were both wounded. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awrded the Victoria Cross on August 13, 1861. He later achieved the rank of Captain before resigning his commission. In the summer of 1865, he and an acquaintance capsized their canoe on the Thames River, New Zealand, with both drowning.
