World War II British Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lieutenant in the Kaffrarian Rifles, South African Forces, attached 4th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. During the attack at Monte Gridolfo, Italy, August 31, 1944, Lieutenant Norton's platton was pinned down by heavy German fire on the right flank of the advance. On his own initiative he attacked the first machine gun position with a grenade, killing the crew of three. He then worked his way forward to a second position containing two machine guns and fifteen riflemen. He wiped out both machine gun nests with his Tommy gun and took prisoners the remainder of the enemy. For supreme gallantry, he was promoted Captian and awarded the Victoria Cross Medal by King George VI on December 1, 1944.
