Ruth Talley of Hayward and Palm Springs, CA Age 92, born in Okmulgee, OK, on November 21, 1919, passed away peacefully at Desert Regional Medical Center on November 27, 2011. Ruth served as a WAVE in the US Navy in WWII and was recalled to active duty in the Korean War. Following her discharge, she returned to Federal civil service as a personnel administrator with duty in California and 2 years in Europe. She resigned in 1958 to attend California State University in San Jose and Hayward, receiving her teaching credential and M.S. degree. She taught English and drama at San Leandro High School and served as Director of Student Activities until her retirement in 1981. Ruth was a licensed pilot, enjoyed gardening, travelling worldwide and spending time with her family and friends. She was a talented artist and enjoyed participating in the Hayward Arts Council and the Artists Council of the Palm Springs Art Museum where her art was selected to be shown. She was also an active participant with the Service Council of the Museum as well as volunteering for various other organizations. Ruth participated for many years in various U.S. Senior Olympics in tennis and track and field and, as recently as last year competed in the Huntsman World Senior Games. She had a great sense of humor, loved her family and many friends, and will be sorely missed. Ruth is survived by her companion of 56 years, Berty Nebenzahl; her niece Vivian Cox of Tahlequah, OK; nephews David McCarron of Austin TX and Jim Crumpler of Novato, CA; and numerous great nieces and nephews, as well as all the Nebenzahls and Wapners as her extended family. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to your favorite charity in her memory.
