Famous Japanese painter and wood block printmaker. Usually connected with landscape and nature prints, he is considered as one of the dominant figures of printmaking in the first half of the nineteenth century. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), initially a fire warden, like his father, the prints of Hokusai (see memorial this website) kindled a desire to become an artist; apprenticed with Utagawa Toyohiro, a renowned painter; upon graduating began signing his work Utagawa Hiroshige. Eventually won fame as a landscape artist, peaking in 1833 with his print series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido (scenes on the highway connecting Edo and Kyoto), was published. This was followed by Celebrated Places in Japan and Sixty-nine Stations on the Kiso Highway. His total output was immense, some 5400 prints. Hiroshige died two years after his retirement of cholera.
