David F. Schieman, 91, Chenoa, died at 11:46 am Sunday, September 21, 2014 at ASTA Care Center, Pontiac.

A funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Chenoa with Fr. Carl LoPresti officiating.

Burial will be in Chenoa Cemetery, Chenoa with full military honors accorded by the Chenoa VFW Post #8350 and Scott Air Force Base military honor guard.

Visitation will be noon to 12:45 pm Wednesday also at the church. Duffy-Pils Memorial Home, Chenoa is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests that memorials be directed to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Chenoa, VFW Post #8350, Chenoa; or the Chenoa Food Pantry.

David grew up on a farm southeast of Chenoa the son of David and Margaret Schieman. He graduated from Chenoa High School in the Class of 1941, and entered the US Army Air Corps in 1942.

Alongside the members of his Greatest Generation who saved the free world from fascism and communism, David’s contribution was piloting B-24s with the 15th Air Force over Europe during World War II, the B-50s and KC-97s under Strategic Air Command during the height of the Cold War.

He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and Air Force Commendation Medal, he retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1966. Upon returning to Chenoa in 1973, he worked as a machinist at Seibert & Sons for seventeen years. He was a member of the VFW, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Chenoa and a Cub Scout Leader.

David was preceded in death in 2012 by Lois (Green), his wife of sixty-five years, whom he lovingly cared for throughout her long illness.

He is also preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter. Their three surviving children are Patricia (Mike) Peters, Fairbury, IL; David T. (Catherine) Schieman, Indianapolis, IN; and Dale (Martina) Schieman, Plainfield, IL. He was a grandfather to five and a great-grandfather to nine.
