Actor. The son of a doctor, he was raised in New York City and studied Drama at Bard College, before service with the US Military during World War II; he was a combat engineer and saw action in the European Theater including the Battle of the Bulge. Upon his return home (he previously made his professional acting debut on Broadway in 1942), he resumed his career on stage appearing in the plays "Joan of Lorraine" (1946 to 1947) and "Clutterbuck" (1949 to 1950). It would be during this period when Hobbs began a lengthy association with television, as he appeared in countless programs, including "Mister Ed", "The Dick Van Dyke Show", "The F.B.I.", "Marcus Welby, M.D.", "All in the Family", "Barney Miller", and many more, usually playing doctors, judges or other stalwart authority figures. He may be best remembered by TV audiences for his role as Peter Ames (1954 to 1962) in the soap opera "The Secret Storm". His motion picture credits include "The Andromeda Strain" (1971), "Star Spangled Girl" (1971) and "The Man with Two Brains" (1983)
