Civil War Union Soldier. He was mustered in as a Private in Company A, 4th New Jersey Militia on April 27, 1861. After serving through the July 1861 First Bull Run Campaign, and after being mustered out July 31, 1861, he enrolled in the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on September 1, 1861. Mustered in as a Private in Company E, he served through all the battles and campaigns of the regiment, even re-enlisting on January 1, 1864. After the conclusion of the war he was mustered out on July 24, 1865.
