Colorado Governor. Successful in construction, real estate, and the insurance industry, he was elected to the Pueblo, Colorado, school board serving (1937-43). He also was a member of the Colorado State Senate (1941-49) and was Colorado's 31st Lieutenant Governor (1949-50). When Governor William L. Knous resigned from office in 1950, Johnson assumed the duties as a Democrat the 32nd Colorado Governor, serving until 1951. During his short term, he fought against the attempts to raise the state income tax, tax on oil, teacher salaries were increased, and appropriations were provided to advertise the state tourism industry. After leaving office, he served again in the Colorado State Senate (1951-59), was a commissioner on the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education and was appointed to the Colorado State Industrial Commission, in 1962. He later died in retirement at Tempe, Arizona.
