Businessman. Originally a banker, Straub became interested in the brewing business with his father and was a member of the firm Straub and Sons until 1873. That year he came to St. Louis, Missouri and became one of the managers of the Julius Winkelmeyer Brewery. He also married Julia Winkelmeyer, daughter of the founder of the Winkelmeyer brewery the same year. He remained with the brewery for the next 18 years, after which he returned to the banking business until his death. During that time, he was elected to the position of President of the International Bank Institution, was President of the German Fire Insurance Company of St. Louis and served on the city council.
