Abe Matheney Pioneer, 69, Is Dead.

Abraham Matheney, 69, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jane Corbin, in Riverside, Friday at 9:15 p.m., from Bright's disease.

Abraham Matheney was born September 23, 1843, in Virginia. He moved with his parents to Iowa, where he spent most of his early life. He was married to Miss Mary E. Swift in 1862 in Iowa. Soon afterward he enlisted in the Union army and served until the end of the war, in General W.T. Sherman's brigade.

In 1878 Mr. Matheney moved with his family to Kansas, settling at Sycamore Springs, Butler county. He plied his trade as a stone mason during the time he lived in Kansas. He moved to El Dorado in 1884.

In 1909 Mr. Matheney built the stone arch bridge over West Branck on East Central avenue. This bridge is one of the best and most beautiful in the county, and stands as a memorial to Mr. Matheney and his ability as a bridge builder.

About a year ago Mr. Matheney was taken sick with Bright's disease. He entered Dr. J.L. Fyman's hospital last December for treatment, remaining there about six weeks and came out apparently getting well. He was able to get around town and apparently had every chance to regain his health when he was suddenly taken sick again and lived only a few days.

It was his intention to leave today for Wichita to make his home with his sister, Mrs. M. Slates. While there he was to enter a hospital for an operation.

Mrs. Matheney died in 1900. Mr. Matheney is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Maggie Like, Spokane, Wash.; and Mrs. Jane Corbin, El Dorado; two sons, Charlie Matheney and Ed Matheney, El Dorado. There are nine grandchildren. He also is survived by three brothers and three sisters.

The funeral probably will be conducted by the G.A.R. post of El Dorado. The time will not be set until word is received from his daughter in Spokane.

The funeral of A. Matheney will be held from the G.A.R. Hall Sunday at 4 p.m., conducted by the Rev. H. Jas. Crockett. It was announced Saturday.
