Dr. Francis Anton Goeltz, 70, Urologist, Civic Aid Dies
Dr. Francis Anton Goeltz, 70, 1840 Herbert ave., prominent Salt Lake urologist and active civic leader, died in a Salt Lake hospital Wednesday at 5:45 a.m. of a heart ailment.
Dr. Goeltz had practiced in Salt Lake Cit since 1915, with the exception of two years, 1917 to 1919, that were spent in service with the U.S. Medical Corps during World War I. He formerly was associated with the late Dr. Walter G. Schulte, who died in 1944. At the time of his death his medical associates were Drs. A. W. Middleton and Richard P. Middleton of Goeltz, Middleton & Middleton, urologists.
Ill Several Weeks
Dr. Goeltz had been ill for several weeks, following a heart attack.
He was born Dec. 13, 1876, in Oyster Bay, N.Y., a son of Francis A. and Alvine Goeltz. He attended grade and high schools in New York City, and was graduated from New York university in 1898. He interned and did resident work in Bellevue hospital, New York City, under Dr. Harlow Brooks. He was resident physician at Hammott hospital, Erie, Pa.
He married Frances Lelia Boydell at Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, Sept. 17, 1902. Until 1909, Dr. Goeltz practice in Erie, at which time he moved to Nyssa, Ore., where he practiced for two years.
He was surgeon for Utah Construction Co. at Emmett, Ida., and Hiawatha and Price, Utah, from 1911 to 1913. In 1914 and 1915, he did postgraduate work in New York City at which time he specialized in urology. From 1915 to 1917, he practiced in Salt Lake City, leaving for service with the medical corps during World War I.
Returned to Salt Lake
In 1919, Dr. Goeltz returned to Salt Lake City, where he continued to practice until his death.
An active civic leader, Dr. Goeltz formerly was vice president of Salt Lake Rotary club, and a member of Progress lodge, F.&A.M. He was past president of the Salt Lake County Medical society, Utah State Medical Assn. and had served as president of St. Mark's hospital staff during 1943 and 1944.
He was one of the first six men in Utah to receive the silver beaver award from the Salt Lake council, Boy Scouts of America, because of outstanding service as council president from 1926 to 1928, inclusive. He had been a member of the executive board, Salt Lake council, BSA, since 1928, and also had served as a member of the board of trustees.
He also was past president of the western branch, American Urological society; past president of the Saturday Night cub, and a fellow in the American College of Surgeons.
He is survived by his widow, Frances B. Goeltz; a son, Francis B. Goeltz, and a daughter, Mrs. Henrietta May Pearson, and six grandchildren, all of Salt Lake City. A brother, Charles Goeltz, lives in Forest Hills, Long Island, N.Y.
Those who wish to contribute to a memorial room honoring Dr. Goeltz, to be established in St. Mark's hospital, may do so in lieu of sending flowers, his medical associates said. Donations may be sent to Dr. Clifford J. Pearsall, 618 Boston building. The family request that no flowers be sent.
