BUCKSPORT – Herbert A. Atwood, 79, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Bucksport on September 22. He was born July 5, 1936 the son of Raymond and Edith Arey Atwood.

Herbert Atwood was a kind and gentle man who never made an enemy in his whole life. He was the epitome of a family man and had his family at the forefront his entire life. He was a life long member of the Bucks Mills Rod and Gun Club and a member of the Bucksport Congregational Church. He worked in the Bucksport Paper Mill for 42 years retiring in 1998. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends and traveled extensively with Irene throughout the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. He was a very knowledgeable man with skills in carpentry, mechanical and electrical work. We will man mourn his loss and his positive influence on so many people which will serve the world well for generations to come.

He was predeceased by his parents Raymond and Edith Arey Atwood, and sister’s Ruth and husband George Hutchins, Shirley and husband Gordon Grigsby and Edith Arnold. Also brothers-in-law Wallie Thomas , Charles Downes, Bernard Bridges and wife Dianna, Clarence Bridges and Raymond Bridges and sister-in-law Edith Sabine and husband Percy. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 59 years, Irene Bridges Atwood. He is survived by 4 children, son Terry and wife Debora, daughter Tracy and husband Eric Jahrling, daughter Karen and husband Mike Moore and son Kent, brother’s Bud and wife Thiry, Ernest and wife Maxine, Fred and wife Betsy, Wilfred and wife Martha, brother-in-law Bud Arnold and his sister’s Barbara Thomas, Yvonne Downes, Joanne Bridges and sister-in-law Shirley Lydick. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Kam, Shawna, Corey, Sandi, Adam, Maggie and Karen Michelle, Great-Grandsons; Drake, Landon, Chase, Rhance III. Rylan and Gabriel. Great-Granddaughters; Addison and Tyler. Herbert also had a large much-loved extended family with many nieces and nephews.

Herb leaves behind life long neighborhood friends and many other close friends with whom he enjoyed many evening of card playing. A special remembrance to Helen and Jim Smith.

Burial will be at Evergreen Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donation in Herbert’s memory may be made to the Elm Street Congregational Church P.O. Box 878 Bucksport, ME 04416. Arrangements are under the direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Services Bucksport. (Bangor Daily News 9/24/2015)
