Mrs. Mele was born in Torrington on April 7, 1927, daughter of the late Lionel and Josephine (Sousa) DaSilva, and had been a lifelong area resident. She was a saleswoman with Sears-Tip-Top Stores, and had been active in civic affairs.
Lillian was a past president of the Harwinton Sundowners, a post she held six years. She was a member of the Sullivan Senior Center, AARP, a volunteer at Wolcott Hall, enjoyed spending time with seniors and sewing.
Mrs. Mele was a recipient of the Bronc Callahan Award for outstanding community service, and was honored to be helpful by researching information for the Torrington Veterans Service Office.
Lillian will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, bringing much joy into the lives of so many.
Survivors include three sons, Ronald Mele and his wife Loretta of New Hartford, Vincent Mele and his wife Kim and Gregory Mele and his wife Janet, all of Torrington; a daughter, Marlene Luciano and her husband Tony, of Torrington; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Lillian was predeceased by three brothers, James, Charles and Leo DaSilva and a sister, Lydia DaSilva.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the nurses and staff at Litchfield Woods, as well as the Visiting Nurse Service Hospice, for the wonderful care and kindness shown to Lillian during her final days.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington. Burial will follow in New St. Francis Cemetery, Torrington. Friends may call Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until time of service.
