Dennis Walter Armstrong, aged 70 of Pahrump, NV and formerly of Shelbyville, IL died surrounded by family on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 after a brief illness.Dennis was born to Richard E. and Violet M. (Hill) Armstrong near Shelbyville, IL on March 20, 1944.He married Shirley Chapman on July 3, 1971.Dennis served 24 years in the US Navy aboard eight destroyers, one cruiser ship and three shore stations.He served three tours of duty in Vietnam with the Mobile Riverine Force.His last duty station was as an instructor at the Navy Gun School in San Diego, CA.He retired as a Chief Gunner's Mate.After retirement, Dennis continued to serve the US Navy in a civilian capacity and spent many hours devoted to his favorite sport, golf.
He was preceded in death by his parents.Surviving family include his spouse of 43 years, Shirley Armstrong of Pahrump, NV; brothers, Larry Armstrong of Shelbyville, IL; Terry Armstrong of Pahrump, NV and sister, Kathy (Randy) Hardesty of Wildwood, MO. He leaves behind several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great- nephews and cousins.In addition to the many friends Dennis made over his lifetime, he leaves behind a team of caring physicians and nurses and his faithful and beloved companions, Braylon and Cassie.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 28th at 2 pm at Lockart and Green Funeral Home, Shelbyville with Pastor Linda Trent officiating.A Military Rites graveside service will follow at Hill Hudson Cemetery, Shelbyville by the Shelby County Honor Guard.In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.
