Dr. John Hick Johnstone, age 101, died on February 27, 2011. Truly one of the Greatest Generation, his 101 years of life were full of interesting adventures and joyful memories, including his distinguished Army service during WWII, his devoted medical care for countless El Paso families, and over 70 years of marriage to the love of his life, Lady Ruth. Born in 1909 in the El Dorado, Illinois home of his parents, James William and Annie Isabella Johnstone, Dr. Johnstone was the first in his family to be born in the United States. His parents emigrated from England and arrived in the United States through Ellis Island in 1902, becoming American citizens as soon as possible. Dr. Johnstone spent his childhood in the small town of Eldorado, graduating from Eldorado Township High School. He worked as an apprentice printer for a local newspaper for two years until he had saved enough money to enroll in the University of Illinois' premedical program. He then earned a scholarship and entered the University of Illinois Medical College in Chicago, graduating in 1936 with a medical degree. Following an internship at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, Dr. Johnstone returned to his hometown of El Dorado and opened an office. It was during this time that he met Lady Ruth Marks, and married her in 1940. While an intern, he accepted a commission in the US Army Reserves, and in 1941 was called to active duty for one year of service. Dr. Johnstone was first assigned to William Beaumont Army Hospital in El Paso, Texas, where he worked as an assistant instructor in the surgical section of the Army Medical School. After the onset of WWII, he was assigned to the 96th General Hospital as Chief of Medicine for overseas duty. In 1943, he deployed to the 2nd General Dispensary at Supreme Headquarters for Allied Powers in England where he served on General Dwight D. Eisenhower's staff as the Chief of Medicine. During this time, he met many prominent leaders and witnessed historic events in the run-up to the invasion of Europe. After D-Day, he was assigned to SHAEF ADVANCE Command. He was awarded the Bronze Star and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel before returning to the United States and leaving active duty in 1946. Following his Army service, Dr. Johnstone worked with Dr. Hubert W. Cone of Silver City, New Mexico for a year and a half before moving to Ysleta, Texas where he took over the practice of Dr. Jerome Love and established the Johnstone Clinic. He later took on Dr. David Carnes, Dr. Ed Jabalie and Dr. Donald Higdon as partners. Dr. Johnstone was a dedicated family doctor and made countless house calls day and night. With his partners, he opened Sunset Haven Nursing Home and Coronado Nursing Home in El Paso. They also served as team physicians for the Ysleta Independent School District in all sporting events. Dr. Johnstone was a Lifetime Member of the American Medical Association, Past President and State Director of the El Paso Chapter of the American Academy of Family Practice, Charter Member of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians and Life Time Member of the El Paso Medical Society and Texas Medical Association. He received an Honorary Fellowship from the American Association of General Practitioners in 1973. His civic activities extended beyond the medical realm. He was a Past President and Chairman of the Board of the Citizen's State Bank of Ysleta, a Past President and Life Time member of the Ysleta Lions Club, a Life Member of the El Maida Shrine, member of the American Legion #58, VFW, Elks and Masonic Lodge, Past President of the El Paso Knife and Fork Club, and a member of the Jesters of El Paso. Although he retired from daily medical practice in 1984, Dr. Johnstone maintained his medical license and training until 2009, when he was 99 years old. For twenty years he was a regular at the Life Care Center where he developed many lasting friendships during his early morning exercise. He was an ardent golfer and horse racing fan, attending over 40 Kentucky Derbies and serving as the attending physician at Sunland Park Race Track. Dr. Johnstone was preceded in death by both his parents and his two sisters, Anna Hamilton and Edith Vechione. He is survived by his loving wife, Lady Ruth Johnstone; his daughters Rita Jean Groce of Aberdeen, Washington, and Ruth Ann Johnstone of Dallas, Texas; his nieces Edith Ann Mueth of Mascoutah, Illinois, and Bernadine Darling of Hilton Head, South Carolina; his granddaughters Marian Bronson of Montesano, Washington, Theresa Wright of Little Elm, Texas, and Major Stephanie Kelley, US Air Force, and several great grand children.
