Ashby Lewis Cayton Jr., 87, of Rt. 23, West Union, departed this life on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at the home of his son. He was born on January 23, 1928, in Doddridge County, a son of the late Ashby Lewis Cayton Sr. and Beulah C. Pratt Cayton. On November 24, 1954, he married Era Carolyn Yost Cayton, who preceded him in death on July 12, 1998.

Surviving are one daughter, Sonja Stewart, Salem; two sons, Patrick M. Cayton, West Union, and Richard J. Cayton and wife April, Salem; grandchildren, Ashby Lewis Cayton III and wife Amanda, Fairmont, Alicia Daly and husband Michael, Fairmont, Alexis Cayton, West Union, Lisa Cayton, Salem, Scott Cayton and wife Misty, Salem, Dylan Cayton, Salem, Brandon Stewart, Salem; great-grandchildren, Katelyn Powell, Ashby Lewis Cayton IV, Jesse Michael Cayton; sisters, Wavelyn Robinson, Salem, Barbara Devericks, Pennsboro, and Betty Walls, Akron, OH; brother, Roy Cayton, Enterprise; several nieces and nephews. One son, Michael L. Cayton, one grandson, Jesse Michael Cayton, and two brothers, Andy and Delmus Paul Cayton, preceded him in death.

Mr. Cayton was retired from Doddridge County Board of Education as Superintendent of Schools. He had also been a principal and teacher. Ashby was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Cascara United Methodist Church. He was a loving father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted in the Cascara United Methodist, Rt. 23 North, on Thursday, January 29, 2015, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Mary Weaver officiating. Mr. Cayton will lie in state one hour prior to his service. Interment will follow in the Christian Church Cemetery, Center Point.

The family will receive friends in the Harbert Funeral Home, 287 W. Main St., Salem, on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, from 4-8 p.m.
