Betty Alison (Soot) Olmstead was born on Dec. 8, 1917 in Veteran, Alberta, Canada to Roy and Beatrice Soot, joining an older brother, Max, and an older sister, Doris. She passed away on March 4, 2015 at the age of 97.

In March of 1923 Betty’s family moved to Grandview, WA. for her father’s health, and at the encouragement of other family members living in the area. They settled on a ranch and home on Frazer Road, where she grew up and which still remains in the family. As a young girl, Betty loved music and became an accomplished clarinet player, performing with the community band. She also learned the card game of bridge at an early age, and enjoyed playing throughout her life.

Betty graduated from Grandview High School in 1935, salutatorian of her class. Hers was the class that selected the Grandview school colors and the school mascot, the Greyhound. She left Grandview for a year to attend business college in Seattle, and then returned home to work and help support the family.

While in high school, Betty set her cap for a young classmate, Donald Olmstead, to escort her to a school dance. The pair became lifelong sweethearts. They were married in her family home in November of 1938, and moved to a small house on Olmstead Road where he farmed. In the late 1940’s they moved to her family’s home and ranch on Frazer Road in Grandview where they raised their three children – Peter, Susan and Donald Jr.

Betty was a bookkeeper and secretary for many years, working at several area businesses. She was also a “roving secretary” for the Grandview School District, and enjoyed a long career with the Sunnyside Valley Irrigation District, from which she eventually retired. Her life’s goal, which she successfully fulfilled, was to see all three of her children graduate from college. Betty loved classical music, and dogs – throughout her life she was insistent upon having at least one dog as a family pet and companion.

She was happiest in her own home, with her children and grandchildren close by. Betty Olmstead is survived by her loving husband of 76 years, Donald; by her three children and their spouses: Peter (Patty) Olmstead of Grandview, Susan (Gene) Beaver of North Pole, AK. and Don (Barbara) Olmstead Jr. of Grandview. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Kyle (Keisha) Allen, Peter (Julie) Beaver, Carrie (Mark) Hay, Donnie Olmstead III (fiancé Jody), Jim (Mercy) Olmstead, Doug (Elena) Olmstead, and Melissa Olmstead; and by 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, by her brother Max, and her sister Doris.

A Graveside service was held at Grandview Cemetery in Grandview, WA.
