MRS. ERNEST BECK

Alice Tong was born Sept.6, 1884 in Ridge township, Wyandot county, Ohio. She was one of six children, two sons and four daughter, born to Hosea B. and Calista (Copley) Tong. She attended the public school near her childhood home. She was converted to Christ when about 17 years of age at Grace Chapel Church of God. She was united in marriage to Ernest M. Beck, Oct. 7, 1902. To them were given three children; one son and two daughters, Nial E.; Pauline E. and Maxine. The last named died in infancy.

As a child Alice was most obedient and an unusual child in gentleness of disposition. As a wife she was devoted and loyal, ever willing and anxious to do her full meed of service and bear more than her share of the load. As a mother her heart beat true and loving for her little ones and yearned for their welfare today and in the long tomorrow. As a neighbor, Alice Beck will long be remembered by many in whose circle she has left a vacant place.

More than two years ago her health began to fail, but she hopefully kept up, looking always on the bright side and keeping cheerful to the last. Her motto seemed to be;
"Every cloud has a silver lining;
And so I turn my clouds about,
And always wear them inside out,
To show the lining."

Om Wednesday, July 26, she prepared the evening meal as usual, after which her husband returned to his harvest work. When at dusk he came to the house, she was ill and suffering intensely. A physician was soon called and loving hands did all in their power to bring relief. She rapidly grew worse and about one o'clock on Thursday morning, July 27, she passed into the eternal rest. By the calendar of mortals she had lived 31 years, 10 months and 21 days.

Those who tarry to cherish her precious memory are her devoted husband, her son Nial Edwin, her daughter Pauline Evaline, Her mother Mrs. H. B. Tong, two brothers Willis and Hayes Tong of Carey, two sisters Mrs. Rufus Coldren of Vanlue and Mrs. Carl Treece of Mt. Blanchard, two half-brothers John Tong of Plymouth, Ind., and George Tong of Carey and one half sister Mrs. Frisby Nye of Carey.

There are other kinsfolk and acquaintances to whom Alice Beck was very dear and whose hearts are sorely stricken in her going. The memory of her unselfish life and her warm heart will be to them a sweet heritage for many years.

The funeral obsequies were conducted from St. Paul's Evangelical church on Friday, July 28, by James E. Hawes, minister of the First Christ of Christ, Richwood, assisted by Ray W. Steiner, pastor of the Grace Chapel Church of God. A male quartette sang a number of selections. Interment was in the beautiful rural cemetery at St. Paull's. A large concourse of friends and neighbors attended and shared with their sympathies the sorrow of the family.
