Claude Erwin Shipp

Claude Erwin Shipp passed away peacefully, at home, in the early morning hours of March 13, 2015. He was taken by congestive heart failure, just nine days shy of his 94th birthday. He is very greatly missed by his family and friends.

Claude was born at Red Creek Ranch, in Wyoming, on March 22, 1921. He was the middle child, of seven children, born to George and Bessie Bradshaw Shipp. A long-time resident of Oregon, Claude enjoyed living in Eugene and Springfield for the past 70 years. Having graduated from Myrtle Point High School, he also held fond memories of living in the Gold Beach & Myrtle Point areas.

Claude married Ruby Alice Miller on June 18, 1955 in Coquille, Oregon. They settled into a home in Eugene and raised their four children. Claude was an avid rockhound who also enjoyed hunting, fishing, gold panning and woodworking. In his retired years he added cutting stones and faceting gemstones to his hobbies. Claude retired from the US postal service, in 1986, after 21 years as a Letter Carrier. Previously he had worked as a dockworker, mill worker, carpenter, and electrician.

During World War II, US Army Sgt. Claude E. Shipp served as Communications Chief (radioman) in Co. D, of the 89th Infantry Division. He was a decorated WWII veteran. Among other honors, he was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions in Europe. After WWII, like many others in the Enlisted Reserve Corps, he was called back to active duty for the Korean War.

Claude leaves behind his wife, Ruby Shipp, of Springfield, Oregon; two sons: Robert Shipp (& his wife Linda) of Springfield, Virginia and Craig Shipp (& his wife Becky) of Puyallup, Washington; daughter: Ann Carte (& her husband Ken) of Eugene; stepdaughter: Kathy Cook (& her husband Scott) of Creswell; as well as 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition he leaves two of his brothers: Curtis Shipp (& his wife Shirley) of Coos Bay, Oregon and Kenneth Shipp of Arizona; as well as his sister: Ruby (Shipp) Cooper of Salem, Oregon. He was preceded in death by sisters: Goldie Shipp and Estella Shipp Hill; and brother: Elmer Shipp.

A Celebration of Claude's Life held on Saturday, June 6th at Oak Hill Cemetery.
