Lt. Robert Alan "Bob" Miller, 43, of West Lafayette, died at 1:55 PM Saturday, June 23, 2001, in Lafayette Home Hospital. Born Aug. 13, 1956, in Lafayette, he had lived here all of his life, graduating from Central Catholic High School 1976. He was married to Mary A. Ruppe on June 16, 1979, in Lafayette; she survives.

Mr. Miller was a lieutenant with the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department. He began his law enforcement career there on July 7, 1984, and was a graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. He had been a member of the special response team, firearms instructor, emergency vehicle operations instructor, and training coordinator. He also served as an EVOC and firearms instructor at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.

Lt. Miller was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Hunt Club, Knights of Columbus, Fraternal Order of Police 157, Indiana Sheriffs Association, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and was active in the National Rifle Association.

Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Clarissa Miller; two sons, Robert A. Miller II and James C. Miller, all of West Lafayette; his mother and stepfather, Elizabeth and Virgil Windler of Lafayette; five sisters, Bonnie Hales of Tucson, AZ, Karen (& Tim) O'Bryan of Lafayette, Judith E. Leverton of West College Corner, IN, Mary Lou Miller of Georgetown, CO, and Rebecca Sue Miller of California; three brothers, James E. Miller of Buffalo, MN, Robert L. Miller of Virginia, and Sheriff William H. Miller of West Lebanon, IN; also several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his father, James C. Miller in 1982.
